1889, Leamington Spa in England, and the American diarist Alice James is dying. Her brother Henry James, the famous novelist, arrives in the hope of saving her. Her brother WIlliam James, less famous, a psychologist and professor, arrives from Boston to bid her farewell. Both must contend with the formidable obstacle of Alice’s lover, Kate Loring. Distinguished Thing is a chamber drama about gender, creativity, and the bonds of a broken childhood. Based on historical events, and derived closely from the letters and diaries of the three James siblings.
